In the midst of November's chilly embrace, many of us are no strangers to the discomfort that cooler temperatures can bring, especially if you're dealing with conditions like EDS (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome), Hypermobility, or MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome). It's as though the changing weather is mirrored in our joints, leaving us in search of relief.
But what if I told you that you might already have a powerful tool in your hands – your favorite songs? Recent research published in the Journal Frontiers in Pain Research has shed light on the incredible pain-relieving potential of music.
The Sound of Relief: Music and Pain
According to this study, the act of listening to our favorite songs can significantly reduce the perception of pain. What's even more intriguing is that the most effective pain relievers turned out to be those sad songs that delve into bittersweet and emotional experiences. So, when you find yourself reaching for those melancholic tunes, there's science behind your choice.
For many of us within the Autistic and ADHD community, these specific types of songs are often on replay, and now we have empirical evidence to back up our musical preferences.
Navigating the Trifecta: EDS, Hypermobility, MCAS, and POTS
A substantial percentage of neurodivergent individuals also face the challenges of what's been dubbed "The Trifecta." This grouping includes conditions such as EDS, Hypermobility, MCAS, and POTS, all of which can impact inflammation and joint pain in various ways. As the temperature drops and we welcome November, managing joint pain becomes even more critical.
Creating Your Pain-Relieving Playlist
So, what can you do if you're experiencing joint pain this month due to cooler temperatures? We encourage you to curate a playlist of your favorite songs, especially those that align with the types of tunes proven to be most effective in pain relief. The emotional and soothing power of music can be your ally in finding comfort amidst discomfort.
Join Our Musical Journey to Relief
We invite you to share your favorite songs and contribute to a community pain-relieving playlist. Let's come together to support one another in managing the challenges that this season may bring. Share your favorite tracks in the comments, and together, we can build a collective playlist for those seeking relief.

No one seems to ‘get it’. Friends and family think you just need to push through or "self-care" more. Internally, so many people in late identified life (me included) feel broken, ashamed or like they are failing or have never reached their full potential, when all along they've had a brain and sensory system that is different from the masses. It can take a lot of strength to keep going.
