Discover your Stress Profile for Neurodivergent Adults - Take the Quiz
Life is a symphony of sensations – the textures you touch, the scents you inhale, the sounds that surround you – they all play a part in shaping your experiences. Just like adding a pinch of spice can transform a dish, understanding your sensory profile can bring a new flavor to your journey of burnout restoration.
Have you ever thought about how your senses guide your day? It’s not just about what you see or hear, but also how you interact with the world around you. We often focus on the big five senses – sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell – but did you know there are two more? Let’s uncover all seven senses and dive into how they can help you identify your unique sensory profile.
1. Visual Sense: It’s not just about seeing, but about how you interpret what you see. Your eyes are like artists, capturing colors, patterns, and details that shape your world.
2. Auditory Sense: From the soothing notes of a favorite song to the bustling sounds of the city, your ears are your personal soundtracks. They’re the gateway to a world of melodies and noise.
3. Gustatory Sense: The dance of flavors on your tongue – sweet, salty, bitter, sour – it's like your own gourmet adventure with every bite.
4. Olfactory Sense: Close your eyes and inhale – scents evoke memories, emotions, and connections. They're the hidden storytellers of your journey.
5. Tactile Sense: Your skin is a canvas for sensations. From the softness of a pet's fur to the cool breeze on a warm day, your sense of touch paints a vivid picture.
6. Vestibular Sense: This sense helps you navigate balance and movement. Think of it as your body's own GPS, ensuring you stay upright and coordinated.
7. Proprioceptive Sense: This sense tells you where your body is in space. It's like an internal map that helps you avoid bumping into things and allows you to control your movements.
Just as spices can enhance or overpower a dish, your sensory preferences can influence your energy levels. Some people sensory seek – they thrive on stimulation and actively seek out sensations that energize them. On the other hand, sensory avoiding can be when we feel overwhelmed by certain sensations and instinctively retreat from them.
Most people do a combination of both sensory seeking and sensory avoiding. The important element to know is that your sensory profile in burnout is different than your sensory profile in thrive. You may experience a heightened sensitivity to let's say sound, but when you are in burnout the degree to which you experience sound sensitivity can be higher like let's say an 8 on a 1-10 scale, but in restoration and thrive you still experience sound sensitivity but the degree to which you experience it is less like a 3 or a 4 on that 1-10 scale.
The majority of ADHD/Autistic humans in burnout can experience both hyper-sensitivity to sensory input and hypo-sensitivity meaning they can experience feeling intense sensory experiences and feeling numbed out to other senses. This can also occur simultaneously, for example, you can listen to your favorite song on your headphones and jam out, but the hum of the light in the next room is driving you nuts.
Imagine this: You're at a bustling market. sensory seeking, you revel in the vibrant colors, lively chatter, and fragrant aromas. It's like an energy boost, leaving you feeling invigorated and alive. But for someone who is sensory avoiding, the same scenario might be overwhelming. They might feel drained by the noise, the crowd, and the chaos. This can be heavily influenced by the degree of spicy burnout you are experiencing.
